Are you familiar with these fluffy flowery plants of the Pulsatilla genus that turn the still uncut grass of karst meadows into a beautiful sight? They bloom at this time of year, around Easter, so they were named greater pasque flowers. ⚠️ In Slovenia, these flowers are endangered and protected, so do not pick them – you can admire them where they grow. ⚠️

Did you know that about 400 shepherd’s corbelled huts have been preserved in the classical Karst? 🏚 Most of them were built in the second half of the 19th and the first half of 20th century. With solid walls and roofs, they used to provide shelter to shepherds, as well as to farmers and stonecutters. Similar dry-wall huts were built also in other regions in Europe, especially in the Mediterranean that has plenty of stones. 🪨

Did you know? [🤓] There is a prehistoric lowland hillfort at Volčji Grad, called Debela Griža. It probably dates back to the 8th century BC. It was built using at least 13,000 tonnes of stones and was the centre of all hillforts in the area. Inside the walled settlement, people lived in rectangular huts [🛖] built from stone or branches, featuring a living space, a hearth and a space for storage. Want to learn some more? Do you have a tasty treat for Carnival? [🤡] If you don’t have a treat yet, try out this recipe for traditional fried pastries, called “štravbe”. [😋]
[🥚] Ingredients: 1 kg of flour, yeast, 4 egg yolks, 4 tablespoons of rum, 1/8 L of white wine, 1/2 L of cream, a pinch of salt
[🧑‍🍳] Preparation: Make a dough from all the ingredients and divide it into 10–12 equal pieces. Roll every piece of dough out as thinly as possible. Use a pastry wheel to cut out strips in a creative way. Deep fry the strips. Dust the cooled “štravbe” with icing sugar. [🥯] Serve with a cup of milky coffee or tea. Enjoy! [☕️]

[Škoromati] 🤡🥳

The Shrovetide carnival called “Škoromatija” is listed in the Register of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Slovenia. 🇸🇮 In the Brkini region, for at least 700 years, “Škoromati” have succeeded in preserving their traditional name, costumes and ceremony. Besides the preparations that start on the day following Christmas and the burial of the “Pust” figure on Ash Wednesday, the most important part is the act of “Poberija” (collecting gifts from house to house) on Carnival Saturday, when the “Škopiti” figure 👺 chases girls with big tongs, the “Škoromati” figures wear bells and smear soot on faces, while the bare-faced “Poberin” figure enters houses to gather gifts. 🥯🍷

Find more about Škoromati here: https://www.visitkras.info/en/brkini
