It’s 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐚𝐲!

Human beings are essentially connected with other living beings in nature. Through millions of years of evolution, billions of different living beings have developed and each of them has its unique place in nature.
Owing to its diverse species, the 𝐒𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐭 ranks among the richest areas in Europe and also among biodiversity hotspots in the world.

In the Karst region, August is the month when we celebrate Terano wine and Karst prosciutto. In 2020, the Terano & Prosciutto Festival would have celebrated its 50th year. However, the global circumstances sadly did not allow this to happen. That is why, this year, we have prepared five themed events, dedicated to all those who have been making the festival possible and attracting visitors to our doors for over 50 years.

On this day in 1907 the Slovenian academic painter and graphic artist LOJZE SPACAL was born. He is considered one of most prominent fine artists  in post-war Slovenia and Italy, and also received global recognition with the pinnacle of his creativity – graphic techniques. He is known as an artist of Istria and the Karst, as he was inspired by motifs from both regions, transforming them into his own artistic language.
Visit the Lojze Spacal Gallery (http://bit.ly/SpacalGallery) at Visit Štanjel and take a walk along the Spacal Trail (http://bit.ly/SpacalTrail), which links the villages of Štanjel and Škrbina where Spacal spent much of his time and was also buried.

[World Environment Protection Day]
It is everyone’s responsibility to take care of the environment. Every single one of us can add their own piece into this puzzle. Every little gesture makes a change:
- supporting our local  farmers
- buying  recycled products
- using reusable  shopping bags
-  walking short distances rather than driving there
- not littering  nature
- …

Are you familiar with these fluffy flowery plants of the Pulsatilla genus that turn the still uncut grass of karst meadows into a beautiful sight? They bloom at this time of year, around Easter, so they were named greater pasque flowers. ⚠️ In Slovenia, these flowers are endangered and protected, so do not pick them – you can admire them where they grow. ⚠️

Did you know that about 400 shepherd’s corbelled huts have been preserved in the classical Karst? 🏚 Most of them were built in the second half of the 19th and the first half of 20th century. With solid walls and roofs, they used to provide shelter to shepherds, as well as to farmers and stonecutters. Similar dry-wall huts were built also in other regions in Europe, especially in the Mediterranean that has plenty of stones. 🪨

Did you know? [🤓] There is a prehistoric lowland hillfort at Volčji Grad, called Debela Griža. It probably dates back to the 8th century BC. It was built using at least 13,000 tonnes of stones and was the centre of all hillforts in the area. Inside the walled settlement, people lived in rectangular huts [🛖] built from stone or branches, featuring a living space, a hearth and a space for storage. Want to learn some more?
