Cerje Peace Memorial and lookout tower
A monumental memorial was erected on Cerje Hill in honour of the defenders of the Slovenian homeland.
The Peace Memorial, which is also a lookout tower, rises skywards like a stone giant on the edge of the Karst Plateau, giving views of all four points of the compass. From this 21-metre high tower, views of the Adriatic Sea, the Friuli Plains, the Julian Alps and the Vipava Valley are simply breath-taking and unique.
This enormous monument, designed as a seven-storey tower, was erected on the initiative of a patriotic organisation called TIGR, and is in honour for all who fought and lost their lives in this territory. The tower also houses an exhibition that connects the past and the future throughout different periods of Slovenian history. From prehistoric times and the two world wars to a presentation of the Slovenian Liberation War, all the way up to the last storey with the lookout platform, symbolising a view into the future.
