In the footsteps of the first explorers of the Škocjan Caves

3-4 hours

Experience the same adrenaline rush as the first explorers of the Škocjan Caves, in the Hanke Channel, one of the largest underground canyons in the world!

A visit to the Hanke Channel offers a brand new way to discover the underground Reka canyon, as well as the opportunity to experience the earliest explorations of subterranean Karst, and walk the trail that dates back more than 120 years. Attached to the steep walls above the canyon, the trail is a unique piece of historical heritage, and the only one of its kind in the world.

Over 100 m high, the Hanke Channel in the Škocjan Caves Park is where the Reka river flows over rapids and waterfalls deeper and deeper underground. Starting out as a tall, narrow tunnel only 5 m wide in places, the Hanke Channel eventually broadens out into larger chambers and halls. Further on it gets wider and wider, eventually opening into the Martel Chamber. Measuring over 2.5 million m3, this is Europe’s largest subterranean chamber with flowing water.
