Weekend break: With bicycles from one hillfort to another – an expedition to the past
During this 2-day cycling tour, we will set the time machine back nearly 2,000 years into the past and explore the dwellings of the then inhabitants of this area.
Vulnerable and inseparably connected with nature, their primary concern was safety. So they found an elevation in the hilly karst landscape from where they could observe what was happening down below. They protected themselves against invasions of unwanted or hostile visitors by building walls from the material that was available to them in their surroundings – it was mostly immense quantities of stones. Fortified settlements thus occurred. In the Karst a hillfort was called “gradišče”, whereas to the south, in Istria and Dalmatia, it was called “kaštelir”.
We will visit hillforts in the area between Tomaj and Štanjel as well as Trstelj and Sv. Ambrož (to the west) and learn about the lifestyle of the indigenous people of the Karst.
