A prehistoric day in the Karst
Discovering the stories and flavours of prehistoric times
The adventure will start at the Debela Griža hillfort near Volčji Grad – first you will be served a delicious prehistoric bar made from the same ingredients as known and used in the period of the hillfort culture. An experienced guide will recount interesting stories and take you back to prehistoric times in the midst of Debela Griža, one of the most picturesque and best-preserved lowland prehistoric hillforts in the Karst. It is the remains
of a mighty fortified circular wall from the Bronze and Iron Ages where people used to live. Such hillforts were built in the Karst in the Bronze Age, in around 1,600 BC, and bloomed in the Iron Age (from 1,000 to 500 BC).
After the visit, Mr Simo Komel, chef of the Štanjel Castle Wine Shop, will present and serve you a glass of fruit wine or a cup of herbal tea, along with a prehistoric dish recreated by following the recipe of a Primorska-type minestrone. The dish contains ancient grain – spelt, home-grown vegetables (carrots, celery leaves and roots), herbs (winter savory, rosemary, parsley), bacon, lamb and goat meat.
