Visit to the sites around Lokev where old-faith believers performed sacred rituals

3–4 hrs

We will learn about the pre-Christian spiritual heritage of local ancestors and their ritual sites.

Starting from the parking area near the Divača Cave, we will visit the Triglavca open cave, where the rites of fertility of field crops and male offspring were performed. A gently sloping path takes you down to the open cave – just watch your step along the way. Once there, you’ll hear the story behind the ritual and even see it brought to life. The walk along the gmajna grasslands takes 15 min one way. We return to the starting point and go to see the oracle where the female seers, called “vidence”, predicted the weather. The easy walk is 15 minutes one way. From the parking area we will head towards the village of Lokev by car and continue until the turn-off towards the Vilenica Cave. From here, it is a 15-minute walk along a trail covering diverse terrains to the location of an ancient sacred site in Gluhi dol, where ancestors once worshipped the god Triglav. There, you can learn about the role of this sacred site and the rituals that were once performed here. We return to the starting point via a circular trail.

In 2015, I wrote an article on symbols on stone portals and arches in the Karst for the monograph The Intangible Landscape of the Karst, and collaborated on several documentaries for RTV Slovenia. Through my company Krasovila, I conduct lectures and workshops on Karst dry-wall construction.
