Wandering among Brkini’s peculiarities
Discover an unusual karst cave, take a look at famous frescoes with unexpected motifs and taste the best fruits of the Brkini hills.
The exploration of Brkini’s peculiarities begins with a descent 40 metres below the surface to the Dimnice Cave which impresses with its numerous dripstone formations. In terms of size, the dripstones could be in the Guinness Book of Records. Perhaps even more unusual is the “smoke” (Slovenian: dim) that billows out of the cave during the winter months, which gave the cave its name. A visit to the cave will give you the answer to this mystery.
After the cave tour, you will drive to the village of Slivje, situated 574 m above sea level. The 17th-century St Martin's Church, located in the centre of the village, features frescoes by the famous Slovenian artist and great patriot, Tone Kralj. He boldly depicted the negative characters from the biblical stories as fascist, and portrayed the horrors of war and the suffering of the Slovenian people in the round reliefs of the Stations of the Cross.
The trip will end, as befits Brkini, with a tasting of Brkini delicacies at the Babuder Tourist Farm in the village of Velike Loče. The Brkini climate and the fertile flysch soil, as well as the knowledge and love of the Brkini farmers, are the magic combination that makes the most delicious and aromatic varieties of apples, plums and pears, along with all kinds of vegetables, thrive here. Apples from Brkini have always been known far and wide. They were once sold to Vienna, Paris and London.
