Rural Transport Museum

Experience the unique story of transportation through time at the Rural Transport Museum, housed in an authentic medieval tollhouse in Senožeče. Interactive displays, digital storytelling and original objects reveal the lives of horse-cart drivers, toll collectors and craftsmen. The visit is complemented by a forest educational trail, a tour of historic mausoleums, and a sweet treat with the museum’s signature cake in the on-site café.

About the museum

Slovenia has always been a key transport link between Eastern and Western Europe. Senožeče, too, was part of this story – with its tollhouse located along the main trade route between Central-Western Europe and the Adriatic Sea.

The museum combines rich cultural heritage with authentic architecture and presents:

  • the development of transport and freight through the centuries,
  • the lives of rural traders, horse-cart drivers, smugglers, and craftsmen,
  • the history of old tollhouses and the local people who helped shape this space.

With its variety of interactive content, digital narratives, personal testimonies, children’s corners, and original artefacts, the museum is more than just an exhibition – it is a true experience.

At the museum, you can discover:

  • A toll regulation from 1524
  • An interactive map of historical routes
  • Original tools used by craftsmen from Senožeče
  • Audio stories told by local residents
  • A digital insight into homesteads and estates from 200 years ago
  • Play-and-learn corners for children

Additional experiences

The museum also includes two extra attractions that take visitors beyond the museum walls and connect the area’s cultural and natural heritage:

  • The Djestence forest educational trail
  • The mausoleums of the Garzarolli and Dejak families near the parish church, telling the story of prominent families from Senožeče’s past.

A sweet break after your visit

Right next to the museum, in the renovated Kotlar House, you’ll find the museum café and patisserie – a perfect place to relax over a cup of coffee or to taste the unique Tollhouse Cake (“Tortica Mitnica”), specially created for the museum and inspired by the stories of horse-cart drivers and local flavours.
