The spring edition of the Karst Gmajna Festival invites you to discover one of the oldest cultural landscapes! The Karst gmajna grasslands are considered one of the richest habitats in Europe and beyond. This exceptional environment is the focus of this year’s edition, dedicated to nature tourism and heritage tourism.

All events of the Karst Gmajna Festival, taking place within the emerging cross-border Kras-Carso Geopark, are free of charge for visitors.

The Karst Gmajna Festival is organised within the KRAS-CARSO II project, co-financed by the Interreg VI-A Italy-Slovenia Cooperation Programme 2021–2027 (European Regional Development Fund).

Friday, 18 April 2025 at 12:00 – Hiking Tour of the Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Lipica Stud Farm (Lipica Stud Farm, main entrance)

The Lipica Stud Farm estate is especially charming in spring. Join a guided hiking tour of the estate, where you will explore the majestic Lipica tree-lined avenues and discover special features of the estate, including the old ice pit and karst ponds.

Friday, 25 April 2025 at 9:30 – Guided Tour of San Michele del Carso/Debela griža (San Michele del Carso (Gorizia, Italy), Danica Cultural Society headquarters)

Event cancelled due to bad weather.

This panoramic walk leads from the village centre towards the four peaks of San Michele del Carso – Debela griža. The route offers stunning views of the Karst plateau, from the western peaks overlooking the Soča River to the Slovenian Karst, the Gulf of Trieste, and Istria. Along the way, participants will have the opportunity to visit several caves that were repurposed by soldiers during the First World War as bomb shelters, as well as other historical remnants from this tragic period. The circular trail is approximately 5 km long, with an elevation difference of 100 m. It is suitable for all as it follows forest roads and trails with ascents and descents over rocky terrain. Recommended equipment: hiking shoes, long trousers, a bottle of water, and a packed snack.

Saturday, 26 April 2025 at 9:00 – Water Supply of the Southern Railway in the Vreme Valley (Famlje, Rudnik Vreme Community Hall)

Join us in discovering the technical heritage of the Southern Railway in the Vreme Valley, guided by Mirjam Frankovič Franetič, president of the TKŠD Urbanščica society.  From the meeting point in the village of Famlje, we will take a bus to the Draga pumping station in Gornje Vreme, which supplied water for steam locomotives during the operation of the Southern Railway.  We will then continue by bus to Gornje Ležeče, from where we will walk to water reservoir “Tajh I” which can store up to 8,390 m³ of water.

Sunday, 4 May 2025 at 9:30 – Cross-border cycling tour through geology, history, and oenogastronomy (Dutovlje, car park in front of the church)

This circular route invites you on a cycling journey through vineyards where the excellent Teran wine is produced, past Karst villages with typical architecture, all the way to the village of Col, where we will admire and explore the stunning geosite – the Torrioni di Monrupino rocks. From Rocca di Monrupino/Tabor, where the parish church with its defensive wall stands, the view extends to the sea in one direction and across the Karst interior to Mt Nanos in the other. The return to the starting point follows the gmajna grasslands, forest paths, and meadows. The circular route is approximately 20 km long, with an elevation gain of 400 m, and is not technically demanding. Recommended equipment: appropriate sportswear and footwear.

Sunday, 4 May 2025, at 10:15 – Karst gmajna grasslands – from hillforts to dry stone walls (Temnica, central village square)

We will gather at the central square of Temnica, the highest-altitude village in the Karst, and first head towards the Sveti Ambrož hillfort, where we will learn about how the cultural landscape was shaped in prehistoric and ancient times. The route continues past the villages of Lipa and Vojščica, where we will explore dry stone walls as they have been built over the past centuries. Along the way, we will visit karst ponds in Lipa and Vojščica and later also the Krompir Cave. The excursion will end at another hillfort – Grmača, from where we will return to our starting point in Temnica.

Friday, 9 May 2025 at 16:00 – Create your own jewellery from local karst limestone (Kostanjevica na Krasu, Lipa 21)

Welcome to the 17th-century Oštarini homestead that once housed an inn, with village dances held in its garden. This time, the homestead invites you to the borjač, the typical enclosed courtyard, where you will discover the simplicity and charm of the karst stone. After a short introduction to the stone (its geological formation, integration into the environment, use and processing, and recognition of typical architectural elements on the building), a jewellery-making workshop using local karst limestone will follow. All pieces made during the workshop can be taken home.

“Exploring the Karst with Pepa” is a unique experience, where Pepa takes you from her gardens along the Teran Circular Trail into the recent past of the Karst countryside, bringing you closer to the stories of resilient village women. Along the way, she unveils the secrets of the Karst gmajna grasslands, and amidst the picturesque vineyards, she spreads out a blanket and invites you to enjoy a Karst-style marenda snack, featuring local specialities from nearby producers. Until your return to the Bunčetova Homestead, Pepa accompanies you with an immense love for her homeland, deep respect for its people, and above all, a profound connection to its nature.

Come to the Honey Festival in Hrpelje and discover the wonders of honey and its culinary uses. Explore the honey market, attend expert lectures on propolis and royal jelly, and enjoy a presentation by the Hrpelje Primary School. Caterers will be on hand to offer delicious honey specialities. The festival will also give beekeepers the opportunity to have their honey analysed.

Sunday, 11 May 2025 at 9:30 – From Aurisina/Nabrežina to San Pelagio/Šempolaj, through forests, Karst gmajna, and geosites (Aurisina (Italy), among stone portals)

The hike will begin in the old part of the village of Aurisina/Nabrežina, among stone portals, wells, and typical enclosed courtyards, called borjači, and will then lead us to a larger valley and the Pocala Cave geosite, where remains of prehistoric animals have been found, most notably the skeletons of cave bears. From there, we will cross rugged fields to San Pelagio and visit the Lindner Cave, then continue along the gmajna grasslands, offering charming views of the sea. The circular route is approximately 5 km long, with an elevation difference of 100 m. It is not technically demanding and follows forest roads and trails, with ascents and descents over rocky terrain. Recommended equipment: sports shoes, long trousers, a bottle of water, and a snack.

In collaboration with Institut Pastirica, we invite you to a unique event dedicated to harmonious living with nature and deepening the bond between humans, nature, and animals. The event will take place in the Petrinje Karst (in the Municipality of Hrpelje-Kozina), an area known for its pristine nature and rich biodiversity. At the time of the event, the Petrinje Karst will be covered in fragrant wild sage, which we will gather while learning about its uses. Through various workshops and activities, participants will explore ways of living in harmony with nature and animals while learning about sustainable practices that contribute to preserving our environment.

Explore the natural beauty and colours of the Karst that also inspired the great painter Lojze Spacal. The Spacal Walk, 12 km long, weaves between the villages of Štanjel and Škrbina. In this period, in early May, the Karst is also particularly attractive due to its abundance of wild plants that can be observed and some also picked.
