Festival Kraška gmajna, a unique festival of nature-based and heritage tourism, invites you to explore one of the oldest cultural landscapes in Europe. As one of the richest habitats in Europe, it offers an excellent opportunity to discover the area’s natural and cultural phenomena.

The events of the Festival Kraška gmajna mark October 6th, the International Geodiversity Day, within the cross-border Karst–Carso Geopark.

All events of the Karst Gmajna Festival, taking place within the emerging cross-border Kras-Carso Geopark, are free of charge for visitors.

The Karst Gmajna Festival is organised within the KRAS-CARSO II project, co-financed by the Interreg VI-A Italy-Slovenia Cooperation Programme 2021–2027 (European Regional Development Fund).

Saturday, 20 September, 9.00 – Cross-Border Geo Hunt from Gropada to the Living Museum of the Karst (Gropada, Trieste)

You are invited to an exciting cross-border geocaching adventure in the Karst-Carso Geopark, starting in Gropada. Children and young people, accompanied by their parents, will explore forest trails leading to the geosite Karst Living Museum. Among unusually shaped rocks and karst sinkholes, they will find the right path using a map, answer questions, solve quizzes, and, with the help of experts, learn about the geological diversity of the Karst. At the end, the young explorers will be rewarded with snacks and prizes.
The tour will be conducted in Slovenian and Italian.

Saturday, September 20, at 9:00 AM – By Bike Along the Paths of the Karst Bee (Cerje, Peace Memorial)

This is not just cycling but a sustainable, environmentally friendly way of mobility with which we will explore the Karst landscape and learn about the values of protected Karst honey. We will learn about the diversity of honey plants, botany, and the unique types of honey that the Karst environment provides.
On the trip, you will discover why the cross-border Karst is so special – even in beekeeping. We will visit two producers: the first will present special types of honey that cannot be found anywhere else, while the second will take us into the world of bees through the prism of mysticism and emotions – as companions, friends, and healers.
The cycling will take place along a nature-friendly route through the Karst commons, along the most beautiful field and forest paths. We recommend bicycles with suitable tires; e-bikes are also welcome.

Sunday, September 21, at 10:00 AM – Workshop on Sustainable Mobility and Experience on the Fairy Tale Adventure Trail Golden Boat (Sežana, TIC)

You are invited to a free guided hike along the Golden Boat adventure, which is a very special poetic family adventure in the lands of Srečko Kosovel. His poems invite you to sail with the golden boat into the sea of poetry, forge golden verses, and collect golden coins and stamps that bring golden prizes. You are invited to the wonderful world of Srečko Kosovel's poetry and to discover the beautiful Karst!

Saturday, September 27, at 9:00 AM – Hike Along the Routes of Water Infrastructure in the Cadastral Municipality of Lokev in the 19th Century (Lokev)

With historian Aneja Rože Kravanja, we will learn about the water infrastructure in the cadastral municipality of Lokev in the 19th century. She will present the results of research carried out based on data from the land cadastre, various documents, interviews, and field observations. The hike will start in the old village center of Lokev, continue past Prelož to the Vroče spring, and then return to the starting point. The hiking trail is easy; we recommend hiking shoes and clothing and water. The length of the route is 7.5 km, with an estimated walking time, including stops, of about 3.5 hours. Participation at your own risk.

Saturday, September 27, at 9:30 AM – Trip to Griža, Among the Karst Commons, Geosites, and Views of the Val Rosandra (Dolina, Val Rosandra Nature Reserve)

From the small stone church of St. Lawrence at Jezero, the path will lead through Karst thickets, among black pines and the Karst commons, to the summit of Griža (441 m). From there, you will enjoy a stunning view of the Val Rosandra, the Karst edge, and the Gulf of Trieste. On the way back, you will learn about the geological features of the nature reserve and stop at the entrance to the cave system under Griža, which is one of the geopark's geosites.

At this year's honey festival, you will be able to discover the delights of honey in cuisine, visit the honey market, listen to lectures on propolis and pollen, and see presentations by the Dutovlje Primary School, Komen Primary School, and the Štanjel branch school. You can also taste various types of honey and honey drinks, as well as receive a basic analysis of honey from field advisors.

Sunday, September 28, at 9:30 AM – Cycling Trip from the Springs of the Timavo River to Duino Among Geosites and Sea Views (Štivan)

An easy circular route (8.5 km) leads from the Karst spring of the Timavo River to the Duino cliffs. From the springs, where the water mysteriously emerges after a long underground journey, the route follows the riverbank to the Fishing Village, then through Črničevje, an oak forest, to the viewpoint above the Duino cliffs, which plunge steeply into the sea. From there, you will enjoy views of the entire Gulf of Trieste. The total elevation gain is 104 m.

Friday, October 3, at 3:00 PM – Dry Stone Wall Restoration Workshop (Divača, at Ražem Stonemasonry)

The Karst Dry Stone Wall Partnership, which operates on both sides of the border, is dedicated to preserving the skill of dry stone construction and dry stone walls that typically characterize the landscape. The workshop will be led by a practitioner and expert in dry stone construction. Architect-conservator and tourist guide Nataša Kolenc will also participate with a short presentation on the cultural landscape of the Karst and the importance of dry stone walls.
Equipment: We recommend work clothes and sturdy footwear (hiking boots), work gloves, a bucket for debris, and tools (pickaxe, shovel, rake).

Saturday, October 4, at 8:15 AM – Cross-Border Alpe Adria Trail Hike (Bagnoli)

A hike along the 36th cross-border stage of the Alpe Adria Trail, from Krvavi Potok to Koča Premuda (Bagnoli della Rosandra), will take us through the picturesque Val Rosandra Nature Reserve. You are invited to an experience that combines culture and culinary flavors without borders and allows you to explore the cross-border Karst region and its identity. A detailed program of the hike will be published soon.
The event is financed on the Slovenian side by ORA Krasa in Brkinov with funds from the Slovenian Tourist Board (STO) and on the Italian side by PromoTurismoFVG.

Sunday, October 5, at 9:00 AM – Geocaching Among Caves and Valleys Around Nabrežina (Nabrežina)

Children and young people, together with their parents, will explore the secrets of geology on a 4 km circular route in Nabrežina. Geological features can also be seen in the architecture, and the route will take us to the cave Pod skalo, an important geological and paleontological site. Young explorers, with the help of geopark experts, will search for fossils, special rocks, take measurements, and solve quizzes, and using a map, they will find the way to the finish. At the end, they will receive a special prize.

Saturday, October 11, at 9:30 AM – Panoramic Hike from the Gulf of Trieste to the Karst (Ferlugi, Trebče)

We will embark on a 5 km circular route with beautiful views of the Karst and the Gulf of Trieste, which will be dotted with sailboats during the Barkovljanka regatta. We will learn about the geological features of the Karst plateau and compare the rugged limestone relief of the Karst with the gently smoothed flysch hills of Istria. The route will follow the old milkmaids’ path, the women who brought milk daily to Trieste homes. You will learn about their life stories.

Sunday, October 12, at 9:00 AM – Hike: How Well Do We (Still) Know the Karst Commons? (Dutovlje)

The Karst commons reflect thousands of years of coexistence between humans and nature. As one of the most typical examples of cultural landscapes, it gives the Karst its unique character. On an easy circular hiking route around Dutovlje, we will learn how it was created, what it looks like today, and what the future holds under different scenarios. In addition to typical rocks, we will also learn about typical plants. If we are fast enough, we may even encounter animals living in the commons. To round off the experience, we will stop at a local winemaker, as befits the land of Teran wine. The hike will be led by Bogdan Macarol.

Sunday, October 12, at 10:00 AM – Hike Through the Karst Living Museum and the Lipica Estate (Lipica Stud Farm)

You are invited to an educational hike to explore Karst phenomena. The route will lead us through the Karst Living Museum, which covers more than 700 hectares of natural and cultural heritage, an area of unique natural and ecological importance. We will then continue through the protected area of the Lipica Stud Farm, with its cultivated Karst landscape, herd of Lipizzaner horses, and architectural and artistic heritage. There you will find century-old avenues and unique features such as the Karst pond and ice pit. The hike will end with linden tea and dessert.

Did you know that a steam locomotive needs thousands of liters of water to run? Discover the former water pump on the Trieste–Kozina–Pula railway, explore the beauty of the Beka Landscape Park and the Val Rosandra valley, and walk along the paths of Klanec. The tour will end in the spirit of Brkini – with a tasting of cider and juice made from local apples (by the way: about 1.5 kg of apples are pressed for one liter of juice) and Brkini dumplings. The event will end at 12:30. Difficulty: easy.

Sunday, October 19, at 9:30 AM – Cycling Trip Among Red Leaves and Views of Lake Doberdob (Doberdob)

Participants will embark on a route along gentle Karst hills near Lake Doberdob in the Gorizia Karst, where they will learn about the specifics of geosites and the hydrogeological characteristics of the area. The route will lead from the Gradina Center with views of the Karst intermittent lake and field, then through valleys, trench remnants, and World War I heritage. The cycling experience will be accompanied by autumn colors and views of the Friuli plain.
