16:00 Hike “From Cave to Cave”

A unique guided exploration of the mysterious Karst wilderness offers a blend of natural beauty and stories from the daily lives of soldiers on the Isonzo Front. The trail follows a section of the Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic, passing former battlefields, remnants of trenches, military railways, cemeteries, and includes visits to three underground caves that served as shelter for soldiers during World War I. Along the way, we will admire the biodiversity of the landscape, Karst meadows, dry stone walls, and listen to music and stories of soldiers who, over a century ago, experienced this landscape as a survival ground during military conflict. A special feature of the hike will be the opportunity to taste dishes prepared on the front lines.

“Beyond Zero: 1914–1918” is a project by Serbian-American composer Aleksandra Vrebalov and American director Bill Morrison, created in 2014 – a universal artistic reflection that transcends time. The project fuses film and music: Morrison edited a powerful film using archival footage from World War I, while Vrebalov composed a score for string quartet specifically for the occasion.

In her composition, Vrebalov weaves in significant musical elements from the era with a clear message: “Never again war!”
The music will be performed live by the renowned Austrian string ensemble Acies Quartett.
