Retracing the footsteps of a World War I soldier

4-5 hours

Listen to the stories of the Battles of Isonzo, which during the First World War marked the Karst forever.

The film, War in Karst (1915 - 1918), which is played in the Monument of Peace of Cerje, takes you to the time of the Great War. The dark nonsense of war was masterfully depicted on the grand canvas by the painter, Rudi Španzel, titled The Dance of Life and Death. Passing the "Slovenian Guernica", as it has been called by some art critics, we continue our walk through the history of Slovenia, to arrive at the observation platform of the Monument of Peace, that on clear days offers a view stretching from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea.

Before leaving for the mysterious underworld, you will see the stone throne of Boroević, dedicated to the famous ‘Isonzo Lion’, as the Austro-Hungarian commander was also called. In the Pečinka Cave, 12 m underground, you can take photos with soldiers in uniform, and find out what the everyday life of soldiers was like during the 1st World War. When you come back out, you can reinvigorate yourself with a military snack (‘merenda’) that has just been cooked in a cauldron over an open fire.

By walking back to the Monument of Peace, you will also return back to the present.
