Wreaths of St. John

Wreaths of St. John

On the eve of St. John’s Day, also known as midsummer’s evening, people used to hang a wreath on their front door to protect their house from bad luck and to attract good luck. This old folk wreath-making custom faded away after the Second World War, but was revived a few years ago.

This beautiful Karst custom is included on the register of live heritage and kept alive in Štanjel through an annual wreath-making workshop that follows the old folk tradition. Visit Štanjel in the period when it is resplendent in beautiful wreaths made from natural materials and karst flowers.
