St Martin's Festival in the Karst 2023 builds on the tradition of open cellars and events scattered throughout the destination to become a cross-border event!

From 4 to 12 November 2023, you are invited to the Karst: to explore a magical autumn-coloured landscape, boutique events and unforgettable experiences!

St Martin's Festival in the Karst will culminate on St Martin's Day! On Saturday, 11 November, the winemakers along the Karst Wine Route beckon you to their open wine cellars and this year again, you will have the option to get there by organised bus service. St Martin's Saturday in Sežana will feature a rich St Martin's market with local delicacies, while the St Martin's Day celebration in the central village square in Dutovlje will include a young wine blessing ceremony, alongside the gastronomic offer. The Wine Festival in Štanjel will be characterised by great wine and cuisine offer, accompanied by live music and authentic experiences in the “pearl of the Karst”. The Botanical Garden at Villa Mirasasso invites you to a unique Villa, Garden and Wine experience, while the Karst Vinakras Courtyard hosts a unique wine and prosciutto tasting. Get some sporting action at the Farewell to autumn in the Karst running event and get to know charming Lipica in a new light. Join us in the village of Pliskovica at the A glass with St Martin and young wine event.

This year St Martin’s Festival in the Karst again brings entertainment, culinary indulgence and tasting of unique Karst wine varieties.

Come and take a look at the autumn decoration of the greenhouse, for all those who like to peek into the world of decorative stories and narratives. Treat yourself to an autumnal feast for the eyes, suitable for those who simply love to wander through parks and gardens painted in autumnal hues.

11.00 – Villa, Garden and Wine – The Sežana Botanical Garden at Villa Mirasasso
A guided tour of Villa Mirasasso, the botanical garden and Vinakras’ wine cellar, along with tasting of wines and dry-cured meat products. Autumn brings flavours of deliciousness. Especially in the Karst. When the cellars smell of new wine, the ovens of freshly baked bread and the Karst gmajna meadows of its wild herbs. Yet Karst autumn offers another, different kind of beauty. A gift of art and culture that reflects the centuries-old Scaramangà time in Sežana; that is why St Martin’s Festival features the Villa, Garden and Wine event, including a guided tour of Villa Mirasasso, its Botanical Garden and the Vinakras Wine Cellar with a final tasting of wines and Karst dry-cured meat delicacies.

15.00 – The Architectural Beauty and Karst Delicacies Experience, Štanjel
A blend of Štanjel’s architectural features and a typical Karst snack, commonly known as marenda. You will discover the architectural beauty of Štanjel with a local guide and taste typical Karst delicacies at the end of the tour. Accompanied by a guide, you will stroll through the narrow stone alleys and admire the main attractions of this pearl of the Karst: the Church of St Daniel, the Roman Karst House with its ethnological collection and the famous Ferrari Garden. At the end of the guided tour, you will experience the Karst with a glass of Teran and homemade prosciutto at the Grajžarjeva marenda snack bar.

19.00 – An evening of laughter: Slovenska vicoteka, Tomaj Community Centre
100% the funniest comedy in Slovenia (a comedy that will make you realise you’ve never laughed so much at a show before)! A wife, a pub, a farm. Farmer Jože and farmer Janez will make us cry with laughter with stories from their farming life and the obligatory “recreation” at the local pub. Don’t miss the chance for a most entertaining evening and 90 minutes of complete laughter!

11.00–15.00 – Teran Academy – Karst, goodies, health, Štanjel
This year’s expert panel at the Teran Academy focuses on the Mediterranean or Karst diet and its impact on health. Researchers from the Agricultural Institute of Slovenia and the University of Trieste will present their findings, while a practical perspective will be presented by two providers from the cross-border region of the Karst. The panel will be followed by a guided “foodlab” tasting workshop and a feast of Karst delicacies.

18.00 – St Martin's experience at the Vinakras karst courtyard with the Kras prosciutto-making plant and Vinakras wine cellar, Sežana
18.00 – Professionally guided workshop
Taste the best Karst dry-cured meats from the Kras prosciutto-making plant and top wines from Vinakras in a unique workshop where we will explore the art of harmoniously pairing top Karst meats with selected wines. It will be led by Valentin Bufolin, recognised as the best sommelier in Slovenia, who will share his wealth of knowledge and experience. 
The workshop experience will be enriched by two exceptional experts: Luka Pangos, Chief Oenologist of the Vinakras wine cellar, who will reveal the secrets of viticulture and wine making in the Karst, and Tadej Kaltnekar, Chief Technologist for the Karst Programme, who will present the Kras prosciutto-making plant and the process of producing exceptional Karst dry-cured meats.

19.00 – St Martin's musical/culinary experience at the Vinakras karst courtyard, where music will combine the best delicacies of the Kras prosciutto-making plant with the top wines of Vinakras. On this very day, local musician Boštjan Pertinač will present his new album “Kraške štorje” (Karst Stories).

9.30 – “Farewell to autumn in the Karst” running event, Lipica
The recreational 9-km and 6-km cross-country races on well-maintained macadam roads through the protected area of the Lipica Stud Farm are complemented by a recreational hike along the Karst Living Museum trail.

10.00–19.00 – Open Day at wine cellars along the Karst Wine Route
Open wine cellars will bear a sign “Dan odprtih kleti/Open Wine Cellar Day” and be marked with a sprig of ivy. The wine cellars will be open from 10.00 to 19.00, during which time a shuttle bus service will be organised. 10.00 – Following the Footsteps of Kosovel – an urban literary walk, Sežana Railway Station
On a guided urban literary walk through the birthplace of the poet Srečko Kosovel, we gather impressions of the town, read poems and, encouraged by visual stimuli of Sežana, learn about the poet's interesting life and his rich literary legacy, and look for the traces he left in the creations of others. Along the way, participants actively engage in discussion and get pieces of the puzzle, which they finally assemble in the Srečko Kosovel Memorial Room into an original souvenir.
The walk also includes a small refreshment and a visit to the Srečko Kosovel Memorial Room.

10.00 – Show for children: About the white kitten who was pure black, Kosovelov dom Cultural Centre, Sežana

The Belimuc family has always been white. Mum and dad are white, grandma and grandpa are white, great-grandma and great-grandpa, cousins, uncles and aunts ... They are all white. Mummy and daddy Belimuc look at the little kittens in amazement, then stand there stunned when they see a tiny black head among the little white furry balls. Something like this has never happened in the Belimuc family before. The show teaches young children tolerance and understanding of difference in a playful and humorous way, and encourages them to respect each other, accept diversity and live in an open and harmonious society. The show lasts 35 minutes and is suitable for ages 2–6 years.

Come visit the magical Vilenica Cave, the oldest tourist cave in Europe. The tour lasts about one hour and we recommend comfortable sports shoes and clothing suitable for cave temperatures (8–10°C).

Pliskovica invites you to enjoy pleasant socialising as well as countless palate indulgences with guided tastings of young Karst wines, Karst honey and honey products and homemade culinary snacks that always delight even the most discerning guest. The interesting and varied programme includes 6 x 2 wine tastings, tasting of honey, mead and honey desserts, a toast with a stonecutter, a bread bun with Karst prosciutto and a closing with live music and lively events in the courtyard of the Slamčeva Homestead (hostel).

WINE VOUCHERS:

All tastings in wine cellars, Sežana and Štanjel are available only with pre-purchased wine vouchers. You can purchase them at info points in Štanjel, Sežana, Dutovlje, Tomaj and Lipica. Tasting glasses can also be purchased at all info points.

FOOD VOUCHERS:

Food tasting with vouchers is available in Sežana and Štanjel. Vouchers can be purchased at info points in Štanjel, Sežana, Dutovlje, Tomaj and Lipica.

All vouchers are redeemable only on Saturday, 11 November 2023. Vouchers are not refundable.
