Pepa’s Karst garden and Pepa’s Story

TripAdvisor traveller rating

Two masterly arranged gardens present the typical Karst landscape.

The gardens’ designers have created two amazing stories about the Karst’s natural and cultural heritage, representing a unique cultural landscape. In the gardens – just like in the Karst – the natural elements intertwine with the characteristic local culture and art.

Pepa’s Karst Garden was given the best rating and Gold Medal in the Small Gardens category at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2009, the second-most important horticultural event in the world. The garden is designed using traditional materials of handicraft art and plants typical of the karst landscape.

The Pepa’s Story garden was awarded a Silver-gilt Medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2012 in London, in the Artisan Gardens category. The designer Borut Benedejčič reached into the past and created a simple shepherd's stone shelter in the middle of a Karst gmajna grassland. The fairy-tale about the Karst and its people is now on display in the courtyard of the Bunčetova homestead in the village of Dutovlje.

Also at the Bunčetova homestead you can visit for free the room of the writer Boris Pahor. Originally, the room was part of the former Pri Marički inn, which was pulled down. The room is now recreated and completely authentic in its size, the items and the furniture.
