Pepa's Karst garden, Dutovlje

Gardens represent the preservation and protection of natural and cultural heritage and the conservation of the native Karst as a unique example of cultural landscape, where tradition equates with high level of art, telling a story of the Karst people...

In 2009 Pepa's Karst Garden received a top rating and a gold medal in the category of small gardens at the horticultural exhibition Hampton Court Place Flower Show, which is the second most important horticultural event in the world.

The authentic Karst garden represents the preservation and protection of natural and cultural heritage. The garden is designed with traditional arts and crafts materials, and plants that are typical of the Karst landscape.

Pepin vrtIts purpose is to offer a place for an active relaxation in the countryside. With its specific architectural structure, the garden represents a respectful environment-friendly life style of people in rural area. 

Together with Pepa's Karst Garden, there is the garden called Pepa's Story which received a silver-gilt medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2012 in the category of Artisan Gardens. It was designed and realized by Mr Borut Benedejčič.

Pepa%27s story

It is a tale of the Karst region and its people, and it is now on display in the courtyard of the Bunčetov's homestead in Dutovlje.


  • May to August: Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Holidays: 10 a. m. to 6 p. m.
  • September to April:  Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Holidays: 10 a. m. to 4 p. m.

Entrance fee: 1,5 EUR/person


After the visit of Pepa's Karst garden, we propose a tasting (only for groups of 10 people minimum).

Tasting – 2 samples: teran juice + teran liqueur

Room of Boris Pahor


At the Bunčetov's homestead, you can also visit the room of the novelist Boris Pahor.

The original room of Boris Pahor was at the Inn Pri Marički, which was later demolished, but the room is authentic with regard to content, size and furnishings. There hangs a portrait of France Prešeren as it was originally placed in Pahor's room, as well as portraits of Edvard Kocbek and Boris Pahor. There are books, awards and other documents in the cupboard.
