Interweaving (basket weaving)

90 min

During a guided tour of the Karst House, you’ll get to know some traditional tools that simple people of the Karst once used, including hand-woven baskets. The craft of basket-weaving is preserved in this area even today. Why not try yourself at basket weaving, too! And then enjoy a slice of prosciutto and a sip of Teran wine in Grajžarjeva Marenda.

As you visit the ethnological collections in the Karst House in Štanjel, you will experience characteristic Karst elements from times gone by. The agricultural part of the house exhibits traditional hand-woven products that Karst locals wove using clematis (a shrub) or osier (basket willow). The basket-making craft has been preserved until today. You will be able to try out your own basket-weaving skills in the ‘Grajžarjeva ustvarjalnica’ atelier. During winter, your basket-making material will be clematis, while in other seasons of the year it will be osier. You’ll be served traditional Karst prosciutto and a glass of Teran wine in ‘Grajžarjeva Marenda’. The hand-woven product will be kept by the Grajžar atelier.

The programme includes: a guided tour of the Karst House, a basket-weaving workshop, and a culinary treat consisting of prosciutto and Teran wine.
