Maks Fabiani was an important urban planner in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and an innovator in architecture at the turn of the 20th century. He left an indelible mark on Štanjel with creations he designed during his 20-year period in office as the mayor.  Fabiani’s most important legacy includes the renovated Ferrari Villa and the design of the Ferrari Garden which, due to its unique water supply system, holds a special place in the history of architecture.

What’s included?

  • A visit to the Štanjel Castle which was completely renovated by the then Mayor Maks Fabiani between 1936 and 1938. 
  • A visit to the exhibition about Maks Fabiani the architect, urban planner, mayor, inventor, writer, intellectual and humanist.
  • A visit to the Ferrari Garden which is best known for its pond with a small island. The water is supplied all the way up to the peak of the hill by means of Fabiani’s greatest invention. With a system of water tanks and supply pipes, the Ferrari Villa and its garden are provided their fresh water used not only for basic needs but also for entertainment and decorative purposes.  The special feature of the water supply system is that it connects the peak of the Turn Hill with the pond and thus covers the entire village.
